Fishing Knives: Here Is How to Sharpen Them

15th Jul 2016

While a lot of fishing fans will dispute that catching a fish is one of the most exciting things when it comes to a fishing trip, getting your catch ready for a feast is an unavoidable part of the experience. In order to make things easier and the procedure of preparation, you should have the right tools with good working condition. Okay, sharp clean knives are important, but now the question is that how will you get on proficiently with sharpening a knife?

Making out how to file knives before fishing is as important as finding a knife on sale when you are on a tight budget. At the outset, you will have to have a good quality filing stone and sharpening oil. Here, you can find different types of stones like water greased stones and diamond saturated stones. However, the second type is perfect to get the job done efficiently, but it is a little expensive. No matter, which stone you decide on, just tag on the directions that come with it in order to stay away from harm to both the stone itself and the fishing knife.

If we talk about the techniques to hone the knives, there are mainly two – one is slice technique and other is circular technique. In the first technique, you’ll grip the knife at a twenty degree slant to the stone. When you try to cut off a very slender piece of cheese from a slab, you will draw the knife blade across & downward the stone. In addition, you are suggested to carry out the same procedure 3 times on both sides of the blade.

In the next technique, the circular one, you’ll also grip the blade at a twenty degree slant to the stone and wipe the blade around it in circular motion. Again as done in the first method, you have to perform this 3 times on both sides.

While this may seem very simple, sharpening knives is a talent and there are common difficulties that are faced by many learners. For example, “curved shoulders” on a knife will make it very tricky to produce a straight rim. And as soon as it is eliminated from the knife, you will find it easy to keep up with the angle that is essential in order to file the knife suitably.

In the last, finally, you have to file the knife with the use of steel and this again brings the feathered rim into line that is produced from sharpening. Well, to get this done, you are required to merely pass both sides of the knife’s rim over the steel several times. And after that you are all set to trial your fishing knife.
