Historically, knife has been used as a weapon. Later it became a utility and then necessity. Today knives can easily be found in our kitchens and meat shops. Moreover, a knife has different other usage like hunting, sharpening, glass breaking, etc. There are diverse varieties of knives available in the market today like hunting knife, utility knife, sport knife, pocket knife, etc. A butterfly knife is a one of a type of a pocket knife as it can be folded and carried in pocket easily. A butterfly knife is also called a fan knife due to its make and design (it forms a fan like structure when open and handles are apart). It has lot more other features that make it a unique knife.

One of the feature that makes it completely different is its rotating handles. The blade of the knife is concealed between the handles when closed. Another uniqueness is its fine sharpness. These knives are used as a self  defense come utility knives. However, these knives are now banned and their usage is illegal in some countries. Moreover, they are constructed in two types namely channel type construction and sandwich type construction. In a channel type construction, the handle is made of a single metal moulded or casted by a machine. On the other hand, in a sandwich type construction, the handle is made from pieces of metal pinned together. However, both of the constructs are at par in terms of looks and performance but channel type construct has more attractions due to its strength and weight.

A butterfly knife is made up of various parts screwed together. Firstly, there is a bite handle that covers the sharp edge of the blade. The user can be wounded if he is holding this handle while closing it and therefore, this handle has a latch to hold. Safe handle is the second side of the handle upon which non — sharpened edge of the he blade is enclosed. The other part is Latch. It adds to the safety of handling the knife. It holds both the handles together and works as a lock. Pivot joint is another part that assemble the handles and blade at a single point. And the most important is of course the blade. It’s the piece of metal that is utilised for cutting or sharpening. Swedge is the non-sharpened part of the blade.

Butterfly knives are therefore worth purchasing as they solve various purposes as well as they can be easily carried in a pocket. These knives are easily available online at a cheap price. The quality though is uncompromised. However, do check the laws regarding its usage in different other countries.
